The Sovol M1D is a tool-changing desktop 3D printer built on what Sovol calls DualX: a hybrid IDEX layout pairing one fixed toolhead with six swappable ones. The pitch is multi-color and multi-material printing without the purge tower — instead of one nozzle repeatedly flushing itself between colors, each color or material gets its own toolhead. Build volume is 300 × 300 × 350 mm.
The campaign launched July 28, 2026 and closes August 27, 2026. At our July 29 capture — roughly one day in — Kickstarter reported US$2,767,012 (HK$21,699,355) from 1,755 backers against a US$191,254 goal, or about 1,447% funded, carrying a Project We Love badge. The crowd has picked a side on configuration: 1,300 of the 1,500 Super Early Bird M1D Advanced units were gone on day one, against 389 of 500 on the cheaper Essential tier.
This is Sovol's second Kickstarter. The first, the SV08 Max, closed July 3, 2025 with 573 backers and HK$5,385,726, and its public update titles show shipping under way by July 21, 2025 — ahead of the August 2025 estimate it had promised. That track record is the strongest fact in this campaign. The weakest is timing: every tier estimates November 2026 delivery, about 66 days after the campaign closes.

The two SKUs differ by enclosure: M1D Advanced adds enclosure panels and an active chamber heating module, which is why it ships in a second box. M1D Essential does not include them.
Key Features
- Dedicated toolheads instead of purging. The fixed left toolhead can be assigned to a support material such as PVA or PETG while the six swappable heads carry colors and materials, which is what produces the near-zero-purge claim. Sovol still notes some filament is consumed for loading and priming.
- Copy and Mirror modes. Two independent toolheads can print two identical parts, or a mirrored pair, at once.
- Automatic dual-head alignment. A mechanical Z-lift adjusts the left toolhead height and compensates Z-offset in real time — the fix that came out of Sovol's third prototype.
- Open source. Sovol states M1D software and firmware will be progressively published to the Sovol Wiki and GitHub, consistent with its SV08 line.
- Six-channel feed covers six heads, not seven. Per Sovol's own footnote, the automatic filament system serves the six interchangeable toolheads; the fixed left toolhead uses a standard single-spool holder.
One capability is explicitly not guaranteed at delivery. Sovol states that the chamber camera's foreign-object and spaghetti-failure detection is still under test and may not be enabled on the first production units, arriving later as an OTA update. That disclosure is in the campaign body and in a numbered footnote.

Sovol lists Essential MSRP at US$1,799, making the Super Early Bird a stated 28% discount. A pre-launch US$20 VIP deposit program promised a further US$100 back; per the FAQ those reservations closed when the campaign went live, and matching to pledges happens manually after the campaign ends.
Who Is This For?
- Makers who print multi-color or multi-material often enough that purge waste and purge time are a real cost, not an annoyance.
- Anyone who wants a support material handled by a dedicated head rather than swapped through a shared nozzle.

- Anyone who needs the print-failure detection at delivery. Sovol says it may not be enabled on the first units and will arrive by OTA later, with no committed date.
- Buyers who need a firm landed cost today. Shipping is charged after the campaign through a survey, and while a reference rate table is published, Sovol states rates may be adjusted to actual logistics costs, and non-listed regions are quoted at fulfillment.
- Anyone uncomfortable with a November 2026 estimate set about 66 days after the August 27 close — Sovol reports trial production already running, but this is a substantially more complex machine than the SV08 Max it shipped before.
- Buyers outside the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of the EU, who ship from China and are told up front they may owe duties, VAT or clearance fees.
- Anyone expecting a fully assembled machine. M1D ships as preassembled modules, and on Advanced the enclosure and chamber heating arrive in a separate box that may show up on a different day.

(2025-07-15), "Shipping Progress Update — Over 500 Units on the Way!" (2025-07-21), and "Shipping Update (as of August 5, UTC+8)" (2025-08-05). The bodies of those updates are backers-only, so we could not read unit-level confirmation — the titles are public and are what we scored. On their face they describe fulfillment beginning about two weeks after close and reaching most of the backer base ahead of the promised August 2025 window.
Off-platform, Sovol publishes a company website and answers at [email protected], and the campaign states the company was founded in 2019 with more than 10 printer models launched. The zero backed-projects count means the community-backer bonus does not apply, which is normal for a manufacturer account rather than a signal against it.

Technical Feasibility
The Design & Development section is the strongest technical writing on the page, because it documents failure rather than only success. Sovol's first prototype used magnetic tool changing and testing showed it was not stable enough for the precision required over long prints and repeated swaps. The second replaced it with a metal gripping and locking mechanism. The third added automatic Z-axis adjustment for the left extruder to hold dual-head alignment. Sovol puts total development at nearly 20 months.
Headline numbers are footnoted with their conditions rather than asserted flat: the five-second swap is given as the fastest recorded time in Sovol Lab testing, and the calibration speed-up is stated as roughly 7–8 minutes versus about 20 minutes probe-based in internal testing. IDEX and tool-changing are both shipping technologies elsewhere in the industry; nothing claimed here defies physics, so the too-good-to-be-true check is clear.
The deduction is the timeline. Every tier estimates November 2026 against an August 27 close — about 66 days, inside the three-month threshold this scorecard treats as aggressive. Sovol reports production line adjustments and trial production already under way as of late June and early July 2026, which is a real mitigation, but the M1D is a materially more complex machine than the SV08 Max, and Sovol itself flags software optimization as still in progress.

The tier data says something the funding total does not: buyers are paying US$300 more for the enclosed, chamber-heated Advanced almost by default. It took 1,300 of 1,500 Super Early Bird slots on day one while the Essential equivalent moved 389 of 500. If you want Advanced at the lowest price, that tier is the one with a countdown on it.
Red Flags Scan
No kill switch triggered. No evidence of pre-launch marketplace listing, identity fabrication, bad-actor linkage or physics-violating claims was found.
Open items a careful backer should track, stated plainly as unresolved rather than dismissed:
- Print-failure detection may not ship enabled. Sovol states foreign-object and spaghetti detection are still under test and may arrive later by OTA, with no committed date. If that feature is why you are buying, it is not yet a promise.
- VIP deposit reconciliation is manual and already generating confusion. On day one, multiple backers posted in the comments that they could not tell whether their pre-launch US$20 VIP reservation was linked to their pledge. Sovol answered each within about an hour and explained that matching happens manually after the campaign ends via [email protected] — responsive, but it is a hand-run process across two payment systems, and backers should keep their deposit order number.
- Checks we have not performed. No verified independent hands-on review, no raw uncut demo footage reviewed, no factory or tooling photography, and no reverse-image or marketplace check. These are recorded as not performed rather than as passes, and they are the reason product authenticity sits at baseline.
Recommendation
Back it if you want this specific architecture and you weight delivery history above independent testing. The creator risk here is genuinely lower than the crowdfunding norm: Sovol has shipped a comparable printer to a comparable backer base, early, and is answering technical questions the same day with honest "not verified yet" answers where it does not know.
Wait if you need the failure-detection feature working out of the box, need a firm landed cost before committing, or want to read someone outside Sovol who has actually run the machine. The M1D is one day old at the time of this review; independent coverage will exist well before the November window, and this campaign's early-bird pricing is unlikely to be the last chance to buy.
